Local Students, Doctor, Nurses Head To Dominican

Posted: January 06, 2010

Boxes and suitcases are getting stuffed with much-needed medication at Manchester Community College.

A group of students, local nurses and doctors will leave Saturday for a weeklong trip to the Dominican Republic to provide medical care for the rural poor.

This is the sixth year that the school has taken part in the volunteer effort to provide medicine and medical service to the country.

This year, the students and faculty at the school purchased or donated 2,000 pounds of medical supplies and other items.

The group of 18 students, four nurses and four doctors will see between 250 and 400 patients a day while in the area of Monte Christi.

Most of the people seeking medical treatment will be rural farmers in the area who harvest plantains. Organizers said the biggest problem they face is dysentery.

The team will be taking everything from prescription medications to skin cream. They will return a week from Saturday.
