New Quentin C. Walsh Memorial Scholarship Awarded

Posted: May 23, 2011

The first Quentin C. Walsh Memorial Scholarship has been awarded to Manchester Community College freshman Stephen Fontaine of Keene. The scholarship was established to assist students who have demonstrated a dedication, pursuit of knowledge, and a proficiency in the craft of building construction.

The late Professor Quentin C. Walsh of Canterbury taught for 25 years in the Building Construction Program at MCC. He was known as a patient teacher who exemplified hard work, integrity, and a generous spirit. To date Quentin's family and friends have raised more than $10,000 – through raffles, potlucks and donations – to perpetuate the scholarship fund for years to come.

In addition to teaching, Walsh founded and owned a construction company, FinestKind, and crafted Shaker-style furniture as well. He died shortly after retiring in 2003.

Fontaine will complete his Associate in Science degree in Building Construction in May 2012, and hopes eventually to open his own residential construction business. As he accepted the scholarship, Fontaine commented that he will "try to live up to the expectations" of those who created the scholarship in Walsh's memory. Like most MCC students, Fontaine is financing his education through loans, so "this scholarship makes a big difference to me!"
