College was always the plan for Tia; she applied to MCC at the suggestion of her teachers and guidance counselor at Manchester Memorial HS. "I was thinking of UNH originally but once I heard about MCC's reputation for transferable credits and affordable tuition, I applied early... after all, I'm paying half of the tuition myself!"
As a Management major, Tia plans to take advantage of MCC's transfer program with Southern NH University where up to 90 credits transfer into their business programs. "The 3 plus 1 program with SNHU is an awesome deal; I can go here for 3 years and then transfer to SNHU as a senior to finish my bachelor's degree."
So far, Tia's favorite class has been Ethics, because the professor is "very debatable," regularly engaging the class in interesting and challenging discussions. "My professors have real world experience which makes the classes fun and challenging at the same time."
Tia has also developed her leadership skills. Early in her first semester she attended a meeting for the Campus Activities Board (CAB), which brings entertainment and cultural events to the campus. Now she is the president. She is also a Student Ambassador, working with the Office of Admissions on special events and serving on special committees with college administration – even the College President! Her time with these clubs and organizations has brought a real world component to her experience. "I'm learning about contracts and negotiations by working with CAB and being involved with all these activities means I know lots of people on campus... and they know me!"
Tia's story is not unique. She wanted to start her college career at a small and affordable campus that would prepare her to transfer to a four-year university; she now recommends MCC to her friends. Her long-term goal – after she earns her bachelor degree – is to own her own restaurant or maybe even a chain of hotels. In the meantime, she is looking forward to adding another experience – college recruiting. Look for Tia at a local college fair in the future. "I want to go out and let high school students know what a great choice MCC is!"
